🌿The wood most associated with
bataireacht and the bataí, the weapons, we use is an draighean (the Blackthorn). Tho it’s not the only wood or even the oldest wood associated with shillelagh (sail éille) fighting, an draighean is the most well known. And we want to help you get to know it better.
🌱This year, we’ll be hosting a number of Community Geekouts on Blackthorn in Irish folklore, medicine, & communal life, including and expanding beyond stick fighting. (Over time, we’ll expand this series to talk about other related plants and animals too.)
Community geekouts are FREE! ONLINE! story circles where we get to know bataireacht (Irish stick fighting) and its ecosystem, and this geekout series is one l’ve been wanting to host from the jump! So excited to share this with youse.
🌸We start our series with the bodacious Jess Erin Sellner for an introductory chat on Blackthorn in Irish folk medicine & folklore. Jess Erin is an American folklorist and herbalist currently living and studying in Dublin. Their research centers social justice and the pursuit of ancestral knowledge with an emphasis on queer theory, intersectional feminism and cultural ecology.
